HOW IT WORKS

Just bring in the items you are interested in selling. No appointment is needed, but we do ask that you arrive at least an hour before closing time.  We will inspect your items right in front of you and sort them by metal type.  Then, we will weigh each metal type and calculate what we can offer to pay you based on the current precious metals market.  You get paid immediately with cash or a check.  Or, we can pay you even more as store credit.

As required by law, you must be 18 years or older and provide a valid government issued photo ID to sell your precious metals and gemstones to a licensed precious metals dealer.

Selling gold is very popular at Calhoun's Jewelers. Please arrive at least one hour before we close to allow us enough time to sort through your items and to ensure our buyers will be available to help you. Our while you wait buying services are no longer offered past an hour before close. Thank you for your understanding.

WHY SELL TO CALHOUN'S JEWELERS?

At Calhoun's Jewelers, you will always get an honest evaluation and a fair price for your gold, silver and platinum.  Because we specialize in jewelry, we are able to pay more for your jewelry than pawn shops or "cash for gold" type stores.  We will always treat you with respect no matter the reason you came to Calhoun's Jewelers.

DID YOU KNOW?

US dimes, quarters, half dollars, and dollar coins minted in 1964 and older are made of 90% silver.  Nickels minted in 1942 through 1945 are made of 30% silver.  We do buy them, and we will pay you much more than their spending value!

There are many ways we determine what metal an item is made out of. The simplest is to look for one of the standard markings on jewelry. '10k', '14k', '585', and '18k' are the most common markings for gold.  Silver is usually stamped '925' or 'sterling'.  But keep in mind that not all gold and silver are marked, some are almost impossible to see with the naked eye, and unfortunately some of the marked jewelry pieces are fake.  If there is any question of the metal content, we can test it to be sure.

Gold jewelry is almost never made of pure gold because it is too soft.  Gold is usually mixed with other metals to increase it's strength.  You can learn more about gold and the other precious metals by reading our Precious Metals Education Guide.

The value of gold fluctuates all the time.  We check the market daily in order to give you the most accurate value for your gold.

Ounces and Troy Ounces are not the same.  There are 31.1 grams in a a troy ounce (oz t), but only 28.3 grams in an ounce (oz.).  Precious metals are measured in troy weight.  We use the unit called "pennyweight" (dwt) to weigh jewelry.  A pennyweight is one-twentieth of a troy ounce.
